26 Aug 2008 Power Outage Closes A&M-COMMERCE, Campus Reopens At 12:30 P.m.
COMMERCE, Texas – A power outage at Texas A&M University-Commerce closed all buildings on campus today at approximately 8:15 a.m. Power was restored at 11:30 a.m. All classes at the Commerce campus were canceled until 12:30 p.m.
All buildings were evacuated and water and refreshments were available to staff and students.
The primary buildings affected were the Agricultural Science and Information Technology Building, the library, and Performing Arts Center.
Classes resumed at 12:30 p.m. Class registration has been extended through Monday, Sept. 1, and payment deadlines have been extended to Tuesday, Sept. 2.
The outage was caused by a transformer on one of the three main lines feeding power to the campus, which resulted in power surges to the Performing Arts Center, Agricultural Science-Information Technology, Science, Gee Library, and Ferguson Social Sciences Buildings.
To make the necessary repairs, power was shut off throughout the campus. University faculty, staff, and students were safely evacuated as a precautionary measure, and asked to remain off campus until further notice.
