A&M-Commerce to Host World History Association of Texas Conference for First Time

A&M-Commerce to Host World History Association of Texas Conference for First Time

A&M-Commerce will host the 2019 World History Association of Texas Conference on February 23 in the Rayburn Student Center at A&M-Commerce.  The all-day event provides a forum for the discussion of all aspects of world history.

“A&M-Commerce is honored to host the 2019 conference,” said. Dr. Cynthia Ross, assistant professional track faculty in history and planning committee member. “This occasion marks the first time this meeting of scholars and teachers of world history will be held on our campus.”

Every year the conference chooses a special thematic focus. For 2019 the theme is “Global Civil Rights.”

“The theme is a timely one for both scholars and the public, reflecting the ongoing news stories related to immigration, refugees, political protest and questions surrounding the idea and practice of civil liberties,” Ross said.  “We anticipate lively discussions of these issues.”

Dr. John R. Chavez, professor of comparative ethnic, regional, North Atlantic and United States history at Southern Methodist University, will give the keynote address. His talk will focus on “Global Civil Rights and Decolonizing Mexicans in the Southwest.”

Roundtable and panel discussions will be held throughout the conference.  Some of the topics include “Intersections of Gender and Civil Society,” “Questions of Migration and Conflict” and “Civil Rights and Student Engagement.”

Ross emphasized that students and faculty are welcome to attend. Registration may be done in advance or at the door, and student registration is only $15.
