A&M-Commerce Students Win Big in Calculus Bowl 2014

Students from Texas A&M University-Commerce competed in the final round of the 94th annual meeting of the Texas Section Mathematical Association of America Calculus Bowl on April 3. The A&M-Commerce Department of Mathematics took 10 students, comprising 3 teams, to the competition and placed second, sixth, and eighth in the state.

“Our students performed well under intense pressure in a competition of knowledge and speed,” said team sponsor Lymeda Singleton. “On any given question during the final round, the lead alternated between our team, Lamar University, and Tarleton University. We are very proud of our teams’ performance.”

The second place team was comprised of Bradford Garcia, Jeff Hinkle, John Pollock, and Tyler King. The sixth place team members were Sirong Lin, Malik Ellison-Green, and Lupe Barbosa. The eighth place team members were William Gutierrez, Jennie Patterson, and Maria Zaldivar. The teams were coached by Dr. Charles Dorsett, Mrs. Lymeda Singleton, and Mr. Joshua Patterson.

“I am very proud of our students; their dedication, hard work, and performance,” said Dr. Charles Dorsett associate professor of mathematics.
