Mayo Review Welcomes Award-Winning Poet Tim Seibles

The Mayo Review will welcome Tim Seibles as a guest reader on Thursday March 10 at 6:30 p.m. with a reception beginning at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Languages room 203.

“Tim Seibles is one of the most significant voices in contemporary American poetry. Having him on campus, to read from his work and to host the Mayo Review launch, is a major event for all of Texas A&M University-Commerce,” said Dean of the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts, Dr. Salvatore Attardo.

Tim Seibles is an American poet. According to “The Poetry Foundation” his work includes themes of racial tension and conflict between classes. His notable collections include “Body Moves” published in 1988, “Hurdy-Gurdy” in 1992, “Hammerlock” in 1999, “Buffalo Head Solos” in 2004 and “Fast Animal” in 2012. He has earned numerous awards including the Theodore Roethke Memorial Poetry Prize and a nomination for a 2012 National Book Award.

The National Book Award was established in 1950 as an award given to writers by writers. According to The National Book Foundation, the award was originally sponsored by The American Book Publisher’s Council, The Book Manufacturer’s Institute and The American Booksellers’ Association until the National Book Foundation was established in 1986. The award serves to recognize the best pieces of literature in America and raise appreciation of phenomenal work, encourage reading and grow the careers of established and emerging writers.

The event is sponsored by The Mayo Review, a student-run literary journal published by the Department of Literature and Languages at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The Mayo Review launch will take place after the reading from 7 to 8 p.m. Following the launch, Seibles will be available for a book signing.
