Texas A&M System Appoints New Chancellor

Former Texas Comptroller John Sharp has been officially named chancellor of the Texas A&M University System.

“I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead this great university system,” says Sharp, a 1972 graduate of Texas A&M University in College Station. “This is truly a dream come true — not only to get back into public service, where I feel I truly belong, but to be a part of a higher education system that has made such a difference in my life.”

As chancellor, Sharp will lead the 19-member system, which has an annual budget of $3.3 billion and externally funded research expenditures in excess of $772 million. The A&M System has a combined enrollment of 120,000 students.

Sharp comes to the A&M System from Ryan & Co., where he was a principal with the largest state and local tax consulting firm in Texas. He has served in the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, the Texas Railroad Commission and as Texas Comptroller.
