In the study “An Analysis of the Potential Economic Impact of Huanglongbing on the California Citrus Industry,” assistant professor of agribusiness, Dr. Jose A. Lopez, and graduate student Samantha Durborow conducted an economic analysis of the impact of the disease citrus greening, or Huanlongbing, on the California citrus industry in 2011 and 2012. In a span of 20 years, Huanlongbing-infected citrus trees could cause a $2.7 billion loss in production value if nothing is done versus $2.2 billion under an aggressive action approach in California, which contributes 80 percent of the fresh oranges in the U.S.
