Physics’ Chopra Honored As Professor Emeritus

Physics’ Chopra Honored As Professor Emeritus

COMMERCE, Texas — During his time at Texas A&M University-Commerce as a physics professor and department head, Dr. Dev. R. Chopra made quite an impression.

“Dr. Chopra was the most successful science professor in the first 100 years of the university,” said Dr. Ben Doughty, a professor of physics at A&M-Commerce and former department head.

All of Chopra’s hard work was officially recognized when he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus on Oct. 29, in a ceremony held in the President’s office.

“It is a great delight and a great honor, on behalf of the students, faculty, and the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, to bestow upon you the honor of Professor Emeritus,” said Dr. Dan Jones, president of Texas A&M University-Commerce.

“I always told my students I wanted to give them their money’s worth,” Chopra said. “Thank you for this honor.”

Chopra worked as a physics professor and department head at A&M-Commerce for 33 years. His list of accomplishments is long and varied.

Named Regents Professor of Physics in 1995, Chopra was the university’s first recipient of the award. He also published over 70 refereed articles and contributed to several books, graduated more than 30 master’s students, and received $1.5 million in research grants from external sources.

Chopra graduated with a M.S. with Honors in physics and mathematics from Punjab University in India, a M.A. in physics from the University of Nebraska, and a Ph.D. in physics from New Mexico State University.
