DACA, a message from President Ray Keck

DACA, a message from President Ray Keck

Like all Americans, we at Texas A&M-Commerce believe in and uphold the rule of law. On our campus, that American dream of openness and inclusion undergirds an environment of compassion and respect for all students and their families.  We also cherish our responsibility as citizens to inform ourselves concerning issues we face as people.

Questions about the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are of serious concern to all of us.  We hope our Congress will pursue a legislative solution to the current impasse that takes into consideration the special circumstances of the young men and women, reared in this country, with no knowledge or experience of life elsewhere, that are contributing to our communities and pursuing a better life through education.

The President has set March 5, 2018, as the date to revisit the question. In the meantime, I hope that students this semester can turn their energies to their studies. The University has an extensive counseling program for those who feel in need of those services. The Student Government Association is at present planning a forum dedicated to these matters. The links, below, provide additional information.

Whatever the resolution, this University must and will follow all directives from The Texas A&M University System, the State of Texas, and the federal government.

-Dr. Ray Keck,  President & CEO for Texas A&M University-Commerce

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a kind of administrative relief from deportation. The purpose of DACA is to protect eligible immigrant youth who came to the United States when they were children from deportation. DACA gives young undocumented immigrants: 1) protection from deportation and 2) a work permit. The program expires after two years, subject to renewal.

DACA Student Status as of Now

  • Sept 5th, 2017, President Trump announced that he would end/phase-out DACA
  • Trump encouraged Congress to pass a bill by the March 5, 2018 deadline.
  • If the bill for immigration reform fails to pass, then the new stipulations developed by the Office of the Attorney General will become the new law.

For updates and information about DACA background refer to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services official page.

DACA Students and the Campus Community

  • We believe DACA students and institutions of higher education mutually benefit from  a strong and continuing relationship
  • We are committed to keeping DACA students updated on emerging law, policy and the resources available to assist during this time of anxiety and confusion
  • A&M-Commerce does not make law or policy for the nation or the State of Texas.
  • DACA students should be mindful of federal and  state laws & the limits of A&M System involvement
  • We encourage DACA students to work with UPD in the days and months ahead
  • A&M-Commerce will continue to facilitate access to legal support, pastoral care/faith-based resources, and mental health counseling
  • DACA students should be mindful of travel risks, therefore, travel opportunities (SYE, LWL, etc.)
  • Nobody in the campus community should attempt to identify students/staff/faculty members who are DACA beneficiaries
